LEAHILL TURRET AND PIPER SIKE TURRET - HADRIAN'S WALL

The three-mile stretch of Hadrian's Wall that survives west of Birdoswald Roman Fort in Cumbria tells us much about how the Wall worked and developed. The remains here include Leahill and Piper Sike turrets, which were built in stone in the early 2nd century AD. Originally there were two such turrets to every Roman mile along Hadrian's Wall, each manned by a few soldiers watching over the frontier. The Wall in this sector was first built of turf, but was later replaced in stone, incorporating these turrets. BEFORE YOU GO Access: Please be aware that the turrets are directly on the roadside. Parking: There is a free car park available at Banks East Turret, a 15 minute walk away. Please take care when walking along the road from the car park to the sites. Please note, the postcodes provided are for the next nearest possible location. PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT Lea Hill and Piper Sike are part of the Birdoswald Roman Trail. This route takes you along some of the most striking sections of Hadrian's Wall. Birdoswold Roman Fort is just a five minute drive from Lea Hill and Piper Sike turrets and is a great stopping point along the trail.
