Hardknott Roman Fort
This remote and dramatically-sited fort was founded under Hadrian's rule in the 2nd century.

Well-marked remains include the headquarters building, commandant's house and bath house.
The site of the parade ground survives beside the fort, and the road which Hardknott guarded can be traced for some distance as an earthwork.

Before You Go

Parking: There is space for parking available near the fort, just off the Hardknott Pass. Take care - the road is very steep.

Plan a Great Day Out

Follow in the footsteps of the Romans by visiting two other Roman sites in the area, once linked to Hardknott by a Roman road.
From the remains of the bath house at Ravenglass, the road went east to Hardknott, and from there it descended to the shores of Lake Windermere, and to Ambleside Roman Fort.

At the other end of the lake, the award-winning Stott Park Bobbin Mill offers visitors a fascinating insight into the Industrial Revolution. Reach it by road or take a cruise down Lake Windermere.
