Crownhill Fort
Crownhill Fort is the best preserved of Lord Palmerston’s Ring of Fire which surrounded Plymouth in Victorian times, dramatically protecting the Royal Dockyard at Devonport from fierce French attack! The largest and most original of Plymouth's forts, Crownhill occupies one of the highest points in the city and offers great views, but is still mysteriously hard to see on the approach: trust your map, it is there! Once you find it you'll find 4 fighting levels with placements for 32 cannons and 6 mortars, nearly a half mile of eerie tunnels, and concealed accommodation for 300 soldiers!
Self led tours of the ramparts and Fort Grounds are available on the last Friday of every month plus there are regular open days when access is permitted to the pubic, but otherwise they are private grounds and not open to walk in custom, so this is one to plan carefully in the holiday itinerary.

Admission:
Usually around £5 adults, £2.50 children, £12 family.

Opening Times:
Crownhill Fort is open to the public on the last Friday of each month from midday.
In addition they hold free public open days, with historic re-enactment groups and cannon firings.
