CROMWELL'S CASTLE

Standing on a rocky promontory guarding the lovely anchorage between Bryher and Tresco, this round tower was built after the conquest of the Royalist Scillies in 1651 and is one of the few surviving Cromwellian fortifications in Britain. Read more about the history of Cromwell's Castle. BEFORE YOU GO How to Find it: Situated right on the shoreline just north of New Grimsby harbour, the castle is only accessible on foot. Facilities: Refreshments are available from a well-stocked shop just south of New Grimsby harbour. Please Be Aware: The footpath winds through a hillside of heather, so sturdy footwear is advisable. There are steep stone steps withing the castle's towers. Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome. PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT Walk up the hill to King Charles' Castle, perched on the hillside above. Both castles, along with the Old Blockhouse on the east side of the Island, can be included on the six mile circular coastal walk around Tresco.
