AMBLESIDE ROMAN FORT
On the shores of Lake Windermere, the well-marked remain
s of Ambleside Roman Fort date from t
he 2nd century. It was probably built under Hadrian's rule to guard the
Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass and to act as a supply base.

Managed by the National Trust.

PLAN A GREAT DAY OUT
Follow in the footsteps of the Romans by visiting two other Roman sites in the area, once linked t
o Ambleside by a Roman road.
From the remains of the bath house
at Ravenglass, the road went east to Hardknott Roman Fort, and from there it descended to the
shores of Lake Windermere, and to Ambleside Roman Fort.

At the other end of Lake Windermere you'll find the
award-winning Stott Park Bobbin Mill. From Ambleside it's a thirty minute drive
or it can be reached by taking a lake cruise, followed by a 15 minute walk.
