Spend a Summer in Wonderland at Caldicot Castle
Follow Alice as she takes a tumble down a rabbit-hole for a series of curious and exciting events this summer

A hidden gem of Monmouthshire, Caldicot Castle is a unique attraction that provides fantastic family days out. The castle was built by the Normans, dates back to the 11th-century and passed through royal hands during the medieval period. It was bought by Joseph Cobb in 1885 and restored as a Victorian family home. After the Second World War it was used as a private residence to combat the local shortage of housing. Furnished apartments in the castle were rented out to young families until the castle was bought by the council in 1963. This makes Caldicot Castle distinct; unlike most surviving castles it still looks very liveable and you get a real sense of the castle as both historical fortress and recent home.

This summer, Caldicot Castle is transforming itself into Wonderland for its series of Alice in Wonderland themed events, getting children and adults alike involved in the magic of storytelling through the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll. The book is being brought to life for children through a Follow the White Rabbit activity trail. Also on offer is the chance to meet Alice and the Mad Hatter at a musical Mad Hatter’s Garden Party with interactive storybooks, songs, games and a tea party. Adults can share the magic at A Curiously Theatrical Tea Party, an exclusive participatory musical play based on Carroll’s classic tale, by Karl Daymond of The World’s Smallest Opera House theatre company.

From Sunday 1st July to Sunday 30th September there will be a Follow the White Rabbit Trail for children, where they can meet the characters and follow clues to win a prize! Through August children are invited to come to the castle for The Mad Hatter’s Garden Party. Children can follow the trail, learn songs from the story, have high tea and join in craft workshops. Children will accompany characters around the White Rabbit Trail, join in an exciting sing-along, run a lively Caucus-race and then partake of afternoon tea with the Mad Hatter. Mad millinery mandatory! The children can make and keep their own interactive storybooks of Alice in Wonderland, as well as designing and keeping their own mad hats. There will be two Mad Hatter’s Garden Parties a day, with groups of children divided into Flamingos and Hedgehogs – but they won’t be used for croquet games.

The White Rabbit Trail and Mad Hatter’s Garden Party are designed to help children discover the wonder of stories. Characters bring the book to life with dramatic readings and songs, encouraging children to join in, improve their memories and develop confidence and imagination. The Trail and Garden Party provide ideal family entertainment this summer, offering a unique day out for children.

As a grand finale to the summer, The World’s Smallest Opera House theatre company will be staging a performance that takes its inspiration, characters and music from Alice in Wonderland, with songs for everyone to join in! A delightful high tea will be served during the interval and is included in the ticket price. The audience will be encouraged to sing along and interact with the characters, providing a charming and singular evening’s entertainment. The Curiously Theatrical Tea Party is a chance to rediscover the charm of this classic tale and to indulge in a spot of high spirits and nostalgia! Suitable for all the family, this exceptional theatre experience is a magical way to end the summer.

Caldicot Castle is an ideal solution to summer boredom! With a range of different events taking place throughout the year, the castle is an enchanting place for children to visit. From the thrill of historical re-enactment events to the charm of fairytale activity trails, there really is something for everyone at Caldicot Castle.
